Can you still make a living from your blog in 2022? (thanks to Covid)

In 2020, wherever you have been on the planet, you have probably found yourself in this situation…

You were locked in a small Paris apartment, holding Zoom meetings in your shirt and pajama bottoms, and keeping a corner of your eye on your children who couldn’t go to school.

And how many French people have you asked yourself: is this what I REALLY want?

The idea caught on until you got to the beginning of a project: building a blog. You, too, want to sip cocktails on the beach in Bali and live the 4-hour week. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

You rush to your best friend (Google) and are stunned: Blogging is dead. At least that’s what many articles (…other blogs!) online say. Slim. You’re too late. Although? We will see.

While zooming into your pajamas…

… Others (e.g. students) have adopted a new habit: exercising at home.

From a global perspective, e-learning has grown tremendously.

It was already a booming sector: since 2000, the size of the e-learning industry has multiplied by… 9! Just that number 1.

In 2020, it weighed nearly $200 billion worldwide. And in 2025, it is projected to reach nearly $320 billion. And the report these numbers come from is dated February 2020, well before the arrival of the Covid and before we see the impact it will have.

It’s huge. But if you’re like me, $200 billion or $320 billion doesn’t mean much to you. let’s compare

In 2020, e-learning therefore represented $200 billion. In the same year it was “only” 23.1 billion for the music industry. And in 2019, the cinema industry (including Netflix, DVD, Blue-Ray) represented 101 billion (we will not take the figures for 2020, which are catastrophic and unrepresentative because the screens were closed).

You read that right. E-learning is an industry eight times larger than music and two times larger than cinema. Just that number 2.

My business administration graduate draws the following conclusion from these figures: It is important to position oneself in an industry that is growing rapidly and which, let’s be honest, weighs (very) heavily.

And again, these numbers came out before Covid affected our lives the way it did. However, we know that the pandemic has had a profound impact on education. The size of the global e-learning sector should therefore be revised upwards.

What is the relationship between e-learning and a blog?

you will tell me “Great Paul, but why are you talking to us about e-learning instead of the future of blogging? »

Because as you will see, selling information products is the most effective way to make money on the internet.

By “information product” I mean content that you use to help people achieve a goal in an area that is important to them. This comes in several formats:

  • digital books;
  • videos;
  • online training;
  • Etc.

The idea here is that through a blog, you will be selling information, a skill, or whatever. The buyer acquires this ability, this information, via his computer. Then he will independently swallow this information at home (or develop his skills).

So in e-learning.

Let’s take a little height. In order to make a living from your blog, you must have a profitable blog. And to make your blog profitable, you need to sell something there. These can be advertising spaces (e.g. thanks to Google Adsense) or information products (whether we are the creators or just the sellers by affiliation).

Finally, blogs (apart from personal blogs) are above all knowledge carriers, regardless of whether this information is free (and consumed via published articles) or paid (via online training courses).

So is blogging dead? Definitely not! But on the contrary.

A revolution is taking place before our eyes: that of the digitization of knowledge. And as with any revolution, there will be winners and losers.

You decide where you want to be.

What you need to do now

Now it’s up to you to apply what you just read in this article.

Whether you are a marketer or an entrepreneur, creating a blog can help you tremendously with your core business or even be set up as a sideline.

In any case, think about how you want to use and monetize it now.

To help you, I’ve created a guide that summarizes the top 3 ways to monetize a blog and how to set them up step by step.

I want to access the manual.
