toy for the young father

Zapping Autonews The car concepts of the year 2022 on video

Did you watch Pole Position as a child? This cartoon featured a very streamlined blue coupe for the gentleman and an angular red roadster for the lady. Between T-Roc and T-Cross, there is a bit of the same logic. Without being a coupé (this is the role of the Taigo but it aims at the same goal), the T-Roc wants to be design, sporty, more oriented towards driving pleasure. It is therefore aimed at a rather male clientele. The T-Cross, on the other hand, is more optimized towards habitability, with a less elaborate design, to appeal to mothers who above all want a practical vehicle. Obviously these are only trends that emerge from the statistics of marketing services, it is up to everyone not to be locked up in boxes. Don’t let the law dictate. This is also the state of mind of the T-Roc since its creation. Remember the brilliant publicity with this little ram who lives only to challenge authority, except in front of the T-Roc he backs off before. After this restyling, it will take a further step back as its grille is inspired by the angular T-Roc R. The other pencil strokes of the restyling make us forget the straight rigor of phase 1 for softer but no less dynamic shapes. as the LED surrounds under the main headlights. Furthermore, in terms of visual signature, it will be necessary to pay attention to the chosen finish, in particular to benefit from the long luminous strip that crosses the grille, identifiable at first glance through all the mirrors.

And if the need for uniqueness above all influences your choice, why not opt for the convertible version of the T-Roc, here renewed and absolutely rare in the SUV segment (only Land Rover offered its Evoque in a convertible version for a time).

Perceived quality on the rise

In Pole Position there were also Turbo and Zoom. On-board computers equipped with autonomous driving and two-euro humor (more like francs at the time), which obviously still inspire me today.

In the T-Roc, the central brain is called Ready 2 Discover. Offered as standard from the entry level with an 8-inch screen, positioned as a tablet after this restyling. With the buttons integrated inside the bezel, this screen doesn’t look very big. As an option, Volkswagen thus offers the Discover Pro (1,110 euros), with a more refined 9.2-inch screen, below which there is now a touch panel for air conditioning management.

Note that both versions of Discover are compatible with Android Auto and Apple Carplay wireless. The Digital Cockpit is also standard, but again small on the first trim level. From the second level of Style, on the other hand, the larger and more complete Digital Cockpit Pro is natively integrated, like the Travel Assist (level 2 autonomous driving).

What has evolved the most on board is the perceived quality, the main criticism of the model before the restyling. Now the foam materials are more present, especially on the dashboard. The door panels are covered in fabric or imitation leather depending on the finish. The T-Roc also gets a little more serious. The previously available colored inserts (yellow or red) come out, now sobriety dominates with black lacquered everywhere.

What does not change is the accessibility and space in the rear seats, very discreet for a normal-sized human being. The T-Roc remains a compact SUV. Status quo also in the trunk, with 445 liters available (405 liters for a Peugeot 2008 PureTech) and adjustable floor on two levels.

Luggage compartment value that drops to 280 liters on the T-Roc Cabriolet which is only offered in two finishes (Style and R-Line), however well equipped. It is also equipped as standard with an electrically operated soft top, which can be uncovered in 9 seconds (up to 30 km / h).

No electrification yet

Since the T-Roc is still based on the same platform as when it was launched (4 years ago), on this generation it will be necessary to do without the hybrid or electric versions.

But while the segment to which it belongs tends to abandon Diesel, Volkswagen still offers it in the catalog in two powers: the 2.0 TDI with 115 HP (BVM6) and 150 HP (DSG7 and 4MOTION available). That satisfy the fleets, not being able to offer fiscally advantageous electrified versions. The petrol offer is, for its part, divided between three engines: the 110 bhp 1.0 TSI (BMV6), 150 bhp 1.5 TSI (BVM6 / DSG7) and the very nervous 300 bhp 2.0 TSI (DSG7 4MOTION) for the T -Roc R. As you may have noticed, the small German SUV is one of the few in its segment to offer 4-wheel drive variants.

We then tested the TDI 150 DSG7 and the TSI 150 BVM6 which both showed sufficient tonicity on a daily basis. The former is well suited to large rollers and the latter for urban use. In any case, our preference for the DSG7 gearbox is undeniable, which always shows better responsiveness than its competitors.

Toy for frustrated dad

We understand better here why the little ram bows to the T-Roc.

If the T-Cross and Taigo are based on a variant of the platform in the MQB Polo version, the T-Roc is based on the Golf base, which places it even better on its 4 wheels. In the R-Line finish, it also benefits from a sporty chassis, progressive steering and standard driving modes. The small SUV is also surprisingly precise, whatever the pace. As always with the Diesel, the motorized T-Roc writhes a little more than with a petrol. It showed us well in the superb switchbacks of the D39 between Vingrau and Tauchan in the Aude. But whatever energy is chosen, the T-Roc shows very effective grip and rigor of attitude for a machine of this category. This is to say suddenly if a T-Roc R and its 300 hp with Akrapovic line, 4-wheel drive and piloted suspension must be something. But as he is very, very badly injured, our T-Roc TDI 150 R-Line test was enough to have more fun and will fully satisfy the young father traumatized by having to give in to the SUV sirens. If the budget allows, check out the piloted suspension (package at 1,270 euros), which adds an additional level of precision in activating the Sport mode. And don’t panic, sitting comfort is quite satisfying, even in 19 inches.

On the way back to the airport, we took the opportunity to take a quick test drive of the convertible model which obviously turns heads, as an open-top SUV is unusual. On the contrary, once topped up, the T-Roc convertible showed perfect soundproofing with air noises that were a little too present all along the intersection of the roof with the bodywork.

A Volkswagen in good and due shape

Very eye-catching this Volkswagen T-Roc. R-Line is coming, above all, thanks to a road behavior that makes you want to get up in the morning to accompany the children to school.

It may not be the most original of the segment in terms of style but, in this niche, Volkswagen offers a convertible version that will meet the expectations of the most exhibitionists. First prize for the German compact SUV: 27,990 euros (1.0 TSI 110 BVM6 Life). And if the budget allows it, the R-Line finish is the most attractive as well as being well equipped, from 36,780 euros (1.5 TSI EVO 150 BVM6).

At this price (exactly 36,700 euros), there is also a Peugeot 2008 PureTech 150 EAT8 GT Pack, with almost all the options, with a much more modern interior, in which you can also add the nappa upholstery and the 10-speaker Focal. .

What Peugeot does not offer, however, is a crazy convertible version, while at Volkswagen it is possible to drive with the wind starting at 36,160 euros (1.0 TSI 110 BVM6 Style).

In short

Head to the Basque coast to experience the mid-career restyling of the Volkswagen T-Roc. Comfort on board, roominess, driving, choice of engine … everything goes into this test.
